Surviving the Christmas Chaos

It’s almost Christmas, which means party season is just around the corner.

Christmas is often associated with indulgence and overeating. There’s work parties, school parties, Christmas day feasts, and not to be forgotten New Year’s parties. We are so busy we often don’t have time to be healthy, or feel awkward or embarassed if we choose to make healthier choices.

So before you eat your body weight in grazing boards and cheese, check out these tips to help you maintain balance over the Christmas holiday and avoid the food coma.

Start with a wholesome brekkie

Set your day up with a nutritious, wholefood breakfast before all the nibbles come out. Not only will you feel fuller and more satisfied, you’ll be able to resist temptation leading to less snacking. Eggs and avocado on toast, your favourite smoothie with a handful of nuts for protein, or granola with yoghurt and berries are great options.

Make your own

We all love a good Christmas nibbles table, but they’re usually loaded with lollies, sweets, and all-the-cheese! Come prepared to parties with your own healthier snack options. Chop up a fruit platter or get the kids to help make some fruit kebabs, make some dark chocolate bites, or add some veggie sticks and nuts to your grazing boards.

Don’t overfill your plate

Overeating is a guilty pleasure for most over Christmas. Endless food tables and leftovers for days! Sit down and enjoy the meal and conversation. Choose a smaller plate and don’t overfill it – you can always go back for seconds if you’re still hungry. Ensure you’re chewing your food properly, and listen for your bodies cues when full.

Keep moving

Including movement in your day is not only great for your physical health and waistline but will help with your mental health as the silly season gets into full swing. Make the most of the beautiful weather and get the family involved with a walk or bike ride, head down to the park, or go for a swim.

Limit your alcohol

This can be a hard one when there’s parties every weekend and the weather reaches boiling point. Swap the sugary soft drinks and beverages for a soda water with mixed fruit, kombucha or a fresh fruit juice. Keep hydrated with water in between drinks, and ensure you have alcohol-free nights every week.
